Featured materials: Terratec rice-hull composite decking

Docks–one of the few ways to make living on the water even more enjoyable.

Is it possible to make living on the water more fun? For purists, being on the water is all they need. Any added structures are just a distraction. But for people who like to play on the water, adding a waterfront deck or a nice dock is essential to taking full advantage of a great thing.

The real trick then is not to detract from the natural beauty of the setting. And the other essential is using materials that can stand up to the environment without requiring you spend all your precious weekends on maintenance.

Water, water everywhere.

Docks could take the title as the most difficult outdoor project–barring digging up a septic tank. If water isn’t splashing up onto your dock, it’s raining down from above. So, the key here is choosing the right material. In this example, Terratec was the perfect choice. Unlike wood and other composites that are made with wood, Terratec is made with rice hulls. The advantage to rice hulls is they are naturally resistant to moisture making this decking ideal for waterfront projects. You won’t have to spend weekends sanding and sealing your dock. All that’s required to keep it looking great is the occasional power wash.

The waterfront home shown here is a fine example of how to turn a dock into your own private resort. An extensive upper deck space links the home to the dock and creates the perfect environment for outdoor parties or simply relaxing with the morning paper and a good cup of coffee. So, I guess you can make living on the water more enjoyable.
